Franchise Ownership: Is It the Right Move for You?
March 6, 2021
Owning a franchise can be extremely rewarding, but the job isn’t cut out for everyone. There are special circumstances that every franchisee has to deal with, and only by understanding those circumstances can you decide if owning a franchise is right for you. Here are some important things to consider about franchise ownership:
1. You’ll get the benefit of an established brand. This is one of the most positive aspects of starting a franchise—you don’t have to come up with branding, or even much marketing, for your business. It’s all been established for you, and people in your community might already know your name before you open. This allows you to focus on the day-to-day of getting the franchise up and running and providing quality customer service. If you’re not much of a marketeer or don’t have the capital to invest in third-party creative talent, then franchising offers an excellent option.
2. You’ll have to work within established practices and guidelines. You’ll need to follow a set of practices and rules laid down by the franchisor. Often, these practices have been honed over time, so you have the benefit of not needing to do a bunch of trial-and-error on your own to figure out what works for your business. These practices, however, can govern everything from how you prepare your food to how you hire employees, so if you’re more of an independent, wild-card personality, then maybe franchising isn’t the best fit.
3. Do your values align with the franchisor’s? This is an important question to ask because you ultimately may not agree with how the franchisor does business—their customer service model, for instance, or how they source and prepare their food. If you’re seriously considering a franchise, it’s important to find out as much information as possible about a franchisor so you can decide whether their values align with yours.
